Bus systems in Latin America - Passenger Kilometre Index
The Passenger Kilometre Index (PKI) quantifies the number of passengers transported on average per bus per kilometre. Latin American examples have demonstrated the high efficiency of bus systems, explaining why BRT has be chosen as a transport backbone for cities, in particular considering the lower cost of deployment compared with rail systems. The PKI rates vary greatly from city to city, as a result of different factors including integration with other systems, electronic fare collection, flexible and integrated ticketing and fare systems but also the type of operating system: conventional lane or exclusive corridor.
